Vacuum Cord Not Retracting: Rewind Steps by Model

Short answer

As a precaution, switch off and unplug the vacuum, and stop if the cord or plug is damaged. The rewind method depends on the model: the Miele HS11 uses a rewind foot switch, the Hoover Smart a carry-handle button, the Kenmore DC2021 a rewind pedal and the SEBO AIRBELT K a gentle tug, while BISSELL Zing/PowerForce 10M2, 1665 and 6489 ask you to untwist a tangled cord before retracting it.

Vacuum cord not retracting: rewind methods by model

  1. Check 1

Is the exposed cord frayed or cut, or is the plug damaged?

    Yes

As a precaution, switch off, unplug, stop using or rewinding the vacuum, avoid taping the cord, and contact the manufacturer or authorized service.

    No

  2. Check 2

On a BISSELL Zing/PowerForce 10M2, 1665 or 6489, is the cord twisted or unevenly wound?

    Yes

Unplug. Gently pull the cord out until it stops; yellow means far enough, red means too far. Untwist if needed, then retract.

    No

  3. Check 3

On a Miele HS11, is the cord intact and not rewinding?

    Yes

Remove the plug from the electrical socket, then press the rewind foot switch.

    No

  4. Check 4

On a Hoover Smart cylinder (GB manual), is the cord intact and not rewinding?

    Yes

Switch off, unplug, then press the carry handle/cord rewind button. Do not pull the cord beyond the red marker.

    No

  5. Check 5

On a Kenmore DC2021, is the intact cord dirty or jammed?

    Yes

Turn off and unplug. Clean a dirty cord. For a jammed cord, pull it out no further than the red mark, then push the rewind pedal while holding the plug.

    No

  6. Check 6

On a SEBO AIRBELT K, is the intact cord not retracting?

    Yes

Switch off, unplug, then gently tug the cord. Hold the plug while it rewinds and do not let it whip.

    No

None of these?

As a precaution, leave the vacuum unplugged, keep the reel closed, and contact the manufacturer or authorized service if rewinding still fails.

Why the cord comes out but will not go back in

BISSELL’s article for the Zing/PowerForce 10M2, 1665 and 6489 addresses twists and uneven winding; Kenmore’s DC2021 troubleshooting table lists a dirty cord and a jammed cord. The manuals document rewind controls for the models below. The table in the models section sets each one side by side, with a link to the page it comes from.

As a precaution, switch off and unplug the vacuum before you touch the cord, and stop if the cord or plug is damaged. The sources treat damage differently, as the next section explains.

Damage to the cord or plug

As a precaution, inspect the exposed cord and plug without opening the housing or the reel, do not tape a damaged section, stop using the vacuum if the cord or plug is damaged, and do not keep rewinding or pulling a cut or frayed cord. The sources name different repair routes:

  • The SEBO AIRBELT K manual says not to use the vacuum with a damaged cord or plug, and states: “Maintenance and repairs must be done by authorized personnel.”
  • The Miele HS11 manual says a damaged power cord must be replaced together with the cord reel, by Miele Service or a Miele authorized service technician.
  • The Hoover Smart cylinder manual says to stop using the cleaner immediately if the supply cord is damaged, and that an authorized Hoover service engineer must replace the supply cord.
  • The Kenmore DC2021 guide warns that damage to the cord or plug could result in personal injury or property damage.

Pull-out length and the marker

The HS11, Hoover Smart, and DC2021 manuals and BISSELL support article describe pull-out limits or markings; the AIRBELT K manual specifies a minimum unwound length during use.

On BISSELL Zing/PowerForce 10M2, 1665 and 6489, yellow on the cord means far enough and red means pulled out too far.
Diagram by TheHowToLab, drawn from BISSELL Support: My Zing/PowerForce Bagless Canister Vacuum cord will not rewind. Not to scale.
  • Miele HS11: vacuuming for longer than 30 minutes means pulling the cord all the way out, because the cord may overheat after a long period of use.
  • Hoover Smart cylinder: pull the cord out without going beyond the red marker.
  • BISSELL Zing/PowerForce: yellow means pulled out far enough, and red means pulled out too far.
  • Kenmore DC2021: once the red mark shows on the cord, stop pulling to prevent damage to the cord.
  • SEBO AIRBELT K: while the vacuum is in use, unwind at least two thirds of the cord from the reel, and do not over-extend it.

What changes by model

The table pairs each model or model group with its source, rewind method, and cord guidance. As a precaution, match your model to the listed source before following its instructions.

Miele HS11 canister

The HS11 manual, identified by document reference M.-Nr. 11 787 241, lists a foot switch for automatic cord rewind. To rewind, the manual says to remove the plug from the electrical socket and then press the rewind foot switch, and the power cord rewinds automatically. It also warns that the power cord may overheat after a long period of use, and that if you vacuum for longer than 30 minutes, the power cord must be pulled out all the way. For a machine that cuts out during use, the overheating guide covers that separate symptom.

Hoover Smart cylinder

The Smart cylinder manual in the GB edition tells you to pull the power cord out without going beyond the red marker. After use, it says to switch off, unplug, and press the carry handle/cord rewind button to wind the power cord back into the cleaner. Hoover’s TSM2110 help page covers a separate case, a wire stuck inside the cleaner, and advises pulling the cord firmly all the way out. The same page says to disconnect the appliance from the mains before examining it.

BISSELL Zing/PowerForce bagless canister

BISSELL’s support article for the Zing/PowerForce bagless canister lists five steps for a cord that will not rewind: unplug the machine, check that the cord is not wound or twisted unevenly, gently pull it all the way out until it stops, untwist it if necessary, and retract it. Its markings say yellow means pulled out far enough and red means pulled out too far. The article names models 10M2, 1665 and 6489. As a precaution, check that your model is one of them before following these steps.

Kenmore DC2021

The DC2021 use and care guide tells you to stop pulling once the red mark appears on the power cord, to prevent damage to the cord. To rewind, the guide says to turn off and unplug the vacuum, hold the plug while rewinding, and push the cord rewind pedal. Its troubleshooting table gives two causes for a cord that will not rewind: a dirty power cord, which should be cleaned, and a jammed power cord, which should be pulled out and rewound. The guide also warns that the cord moves rapidly when rewinding, so keep children away and leave a clear path.

SEBO AIRBELT K (K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi, K3 Premium)

The AIRBELT K manual, which covers the K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi and K3 Premium, describes its retracting procedure in a section on retracting the cord. It says to switch the vacuum off, unplug it from the outlet, and gently tug the cord, and that the mechanism will automatically rewind the cord. The plug should be held while it rewinds into the cord wheel, and it should not be allowed to whip. The rewind mechanism stops automatically. Its safety rules also say to unwind the cord at least two thirds of its length while the vacuum is in use.

When service is needed

As a precaution, stop and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service when the cord or plug is damaged, or when an intact cord still will not wind in after the rewind steps documented for your model. A vacuum that will not run at all is a different symptom; the power-on guide covers that case, and the general vacuum troubleshooting guide covers the wider range.

As a precaution, do not open the cord reel to look for a spring or catch.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the cord come out but not go back in?
