How to Clean or Replace a Shop Vac Filter
Short answer
Match your model to the table before cleaning: it separates foam, cartridge, flat fold and HEPA filters. Follow the cleaning and drying instructions in that row, and use its replacement criteria to assess damage. As a precaution, unplug the machine before handling a filter.
Shop vac filter: checks by model
-
Check 1
On a Kärcher WD 5, is the flat fold filter dirty?
Yes
Remove and empty the filter box, then tap it against a bin edge. If the filter needs rinsing, follow the WD 5 entry below.
No
-
Check 2
On a DeWalt DWV010 or DWV012, are the filters still installed before a wet pickup?
Yes
Remove the filters before wet pickup, as the DeWalt manuals instruct.
No
-
Check 3
On a RIDGID 6000RV0 or WD40800, is the filter wet after liquid pickup?
Yes
Let the filter dry before you pick up dry debris, as the RIDGID manuals say.
No
-
Check 4
On a model listed in the table, is the filter torn, holed, worn or damaged?
Yes
Replace it according to the damage criteria in the table for your model.
No
-
Check 5
On a Kärcher WD 2 Plus / WD 3 with a foam or cartridge filter, is the filter dirty?
Yes
Clean it under running water without rubbing, then let it dry completely before reinserting it.
No
None of these?
As a precaution, if suction does not return after these checks, stop using the vacuum and contact its manufacturer.
The filter material and its condition determine which maintenance instructions to use in the table below. Each row links to the relevant manual. The DeWalt entries cover dust extractors, with their own filter-care procedures. As a precaution, unplug the machine before removing a filter. For faults beyond filter care, see the wet/dry vac stops sucking guide.
What changes by model
The table lists the filter each manual names, what it says about wet pickup, how to clean and dry it, and when to replace it. Each model name links to its source.
| Model | Filter named in the manual | Wet pickup | Cleaning and drying | Replacement signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kärcher WD 2 Plus / WD 3 | Foam filter or cartridge filter, plus a filter bag | Do not use a filter bag when vacuuming wet | Rinse under running water, do not rub or scrub, dry completely | Filter damaged; filter bag too full |
| Kärcher WD 5 | Flat fold filter, plus an additional filter bag if necessary | Do not use a filter bag for wet vacuuming | Tap the filter box; rinse the flat fold filter if needed, without wiping or brushing; dry completely | Filter damaged; filter bag clogged |
| DeWalt DWV010 | HEPA filters (I) | Remove the filters before wet pickup | Gently tap, or rinse with room temperature water and let air dry | Replace if damaged or in doubt; estimated life: six to twelve months, depending on use and care |
| DeWalt DWV012 | HEPA filters (I) | Remove the filters before wet pickup | Gently tap, or rinse with room temperature water and let air dry | Replace if damaged or in doubt; estimated life: six to twelve months, depending on use and care |
| RIDGID 6000RV0 | Qwik Lock filter, paper | Filter removal recommended for large amounts of liquid | Gently tap out dry debris; rinse without damaging water pressure; dry before dry pickup | Replace on tears or small holes |
| RIDGID WD40800 | Qwik Lock filter, VF3500 in the parts list | Filter removal recommended for large amounts of liquid | Gently tap out dry debris; rinse without damaging water pressure; dry before reinstalling | Replace if damaged or worn |
Kärcher
The Kärcher WD 2 Plus / WD 3 manual requires a foam or cartridge filter for wet and dry use. It prohibits a filter bag during wet pickup. For dry pickup, the foam filter needs a bag; the cartridge filter needs a bag for fine dust. Remove a dirty foam or cartridge filter and rinse it under running water if needed. Do not rub or scrub it. Let it dry completely before refitting it. Replace the bag before it becomes overfull and risks damage.
The Kärcher WD 5 manual requires the flat fold filter for wet and dry use. It prohibits a bag during wet pickup. It recommends cleaning the filter box after every use: remove the box, empty it over a bin and tap it against the bin edge with the filter inside. If needed, remove the flat fold filter for separate cleaning. Rinse it under running water without wiping or brushing, then let it dry completely. Do not press the filter cleaning button with a wet filter or a bag fitted.
DeWalt
The DeWalt DWV010 and DWV012 are dust extractors. Their manuals instruct users to remove filters (I) before wet pickup. For filter care, both prohibit compressed air and brushes because these can damage the membrane and let dust pass through. If cleaning is needed, gently tap the filters against a hard surface, or rinse them with room temperature water and let them air dry. Both give an estimated filter life of six to twelve months, depending on use and care. Replace damaged filters, or filters whose condition is in doubt.
For refitting, the DWV010 instructions identify seal (S) and threads (T); the DWV012 instructions identify seal (X) and threads (W). Check that the seal is secure, align the threads and turn each filter clockwise with moderate force until tight. Close the canister latches after replacing the head. These are the steps in each manual’s To Install Filters section.
For both extractors, automatic cleaning alternates between two filters, cleaning one every 30 seconds. Both manuals warn that after many hours this system may lose effectiveness, requiring filter cleaning or replacement. Both list the DWV9402 fleece bag and direct users to discard it when airflow becomes restricted. The bag must not be reused.
RIDGID
The RIDGID 6000RV0 and RIDGID WD40800 manuals recommend removing the filter for large liquid pickups. They explain that a saturated filter can cause mist in the exhaust. Both require drying the filter after liquid pickup and before collecting dry debris.
For these two models, remove the filter and gently tap it against the drum interior to release dry debris. Their wet-filter cleaning instructions allow water from a hose or tap, with pressure low enough to avoid damage. Both require replacement if the filter has holes or tears. The WD40800 also specifies replacement for wear or damage. Both require refitting the filter before dry pickup to protect the blower wheel and motor. The WD40800 parts list names the VF3500 Qwik Lock filter.
For the WD40800 Qwik Lock fitting, slide the filter over its cage. Press the outer edge down until the bottom rubber gasket sits securely around the cage base and against the lid. Align the center hole with the stud, then press near the stud until the filter snaps over its ball. The manual warns that a poorly seated bottom gasket can let debris bypass the filter.
Deciding whether to clean or replace
Choose the model row before deciding between cleaning and replacement. Compare the observed damage with that row’s replacement signal. As a precaution, if you are unsure which filter assembly is fitted, ask the manufacturer before washing or ordering parts.
For suction problems the filter does not explain, see the no-suction guide and the filter replacement guide.
When to stop and contact the manufacturer
As a precaution, stop using the machine if its filter is damaged and a replacement for the exact model is unavailable. The DWV010 and DWV012 manuals give 1-800-4-DEWALT (1-800-433-9258) for questions or comments about those tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can compressed air or a brush clean the HEPA filters?
The DeWalt DWV010 and DWV012 filter-care sections prohibit compressed air and brushes. They warn that these methods damage the membrane and let dust pass through. They permit gentle tapping or rinsing with room temperature water when cleaning is needed.
How long do the dust extractor filters last?
The DWV010 and DWV012 manuals give an estimated six to twelve months, depending on use and care. Both require replacement if filter condition is in doubt.
Can rinsing damage the paper filter?
The RIDGID 6000RV0 and WD40800 wet-filter cleaning instructions warn against water pressure strong enough to damage the filter. After cleaning, inspect the paper for holes or tears and replace it if either is present.
