Vacuum Filters: Which to Wash and Which to Replace

Short answer

Hoover's manuals say to switch off and unplug the vacuum before cleaning or maintenance. Hoover recommends replacing filters once a year for the model groups on its dust-blowing-out page. The Miele HS11 manual sets replacement by FilterBag packet, by time, or by its TimeStrip indicator, depending on the exhaust filter type.

Filter care by model

  1. Check 1

Is your Hoover model in a procedure group on Hoover's dust-blowing-out page?

    Yes

Hoover recommends replacing filters yearly for those groups. As a precaution, match the replacement to your exact model number.

    No

  2. Check 2

Have you washed filter A or B on the Dyson upright covered by the linked manual with header code SV12?

    Yes

That manual says to dry the filter at least 24 hours in a well-ventilated, warm place, and to refit it once it is completely dry.

    No

  3. Check 3

Have you washed a filter on a BISSELL Zing / PowerForce bagless canister, model 10M2, 1665 or 6489?

    Yes

Air dry every washed piece completely for 24 to 48 hours before reinstalling.

    No

  4. Check 4

Does the linked Hoover manual labeled HU71 or PU31 apply to your vacuum?

    Yes

Wash the exhaust filter monthly; dry for 24 hours and refit when completely dry. The manual labeled PU31 also warns against hot water or detergents.

    No

  5. Check 5

On a Miele HS11, are you starting a new packet of FilterBags?

    Yes

The manual says to replace the motor protection filter each time, and the AirClean exhaust filter too if that type is fitted.

    No

None of these?

For Miele HS11 exhaust types b, c and d, follow the manual: about one year for AirClean Plus 50, and a completely red TimeStrip for types c and d.

Hoover’s dust-blowing-out page tells owners of PU1240, PU2012 and U3530 vacuums in group 5 to wash the filter under the bag and the exhaust filter at the back. It also recommends yearly filter replacement for that group. The Miele HS11 manual sets exhaust-filter replacement intervals according to the fitted filter type.

The sources cover Dyson and Hoover (UK pages and manuals), BISSELL (a support article), and Miele (a US manual). The linked Hoover HU71 and PU31 manuals instruct users to switch off and unplug before cleaning or maintenance. As a precaution, switch off and unplug your vacuum before examining a filter.

Washing or replacing: what the sources say

As a precaution, check both the washing instructions and the replacement interval for your filter. Hoover’s dust-blowing-out page recommends yearly filter replacement for all six procedure groups. For group 5, including PU1240, PU2012 and U3530, it also instructs owners to wash the filters and dry them thoroughly before refitting. BISSELL gives a wash-if-needed rule and 24 to 48 hours of complete air drying for Zing / PowerForce bagless canister models 10M2, 1665 and 6489. The Miele HS11 manual sets replacement by packet, by time, or by an indicator, depending on the exhaust type.

Dyson

The Dyson UK user manual describes two filters. Filter A sits in the bin: press the button on the bin handle to detach the bin, then push up the catch and lift the filter out. Filter B sits in the ball housing: lay the machine on its side, turn the lock in the center of the ball until the cover releases, then twist the filter counter-clockwise to remove it. For that filter, the manual says to remove the inner foam part, wash the outer filter in a rotating motion, and wash the inner foam without squeezing it, repeating until the water runs clear.

The manual says “Wash your filters at least once a month to maintain optimum suction power.” The filter A instructions specify cold water. For filters A and B, the manual requires at least 24 hours of drying in a well-ventilated, warm place and complete dryness before refitting, because a damp filter can damage the machine. It also says not to dry a filter in a tumble dryer, a microwave or near a naked flame. The file is named UP32, and the manual’s front page shows the code SV12.

Hoover

The Hoover dust-blowing-out page sorts its models into six procedure groups. Each group recommends replacing the filters once per year, and each says to dry washed filters thoroughly before refitting. Group 5 lists PU1240, PU2012 and U3530, and it says to replace the paper bag when it is two-thirds full.

The HU71 manual says: “The exhaust filter should be washed every month.” Its pre-motor filters come out of the upper part of the dust bin, and they are washed under hand warm water until the water runs clean, then left to dry for 24 hours. The manual also says the mesh sleeve must be reassembled onto the HEPA filter before use.

The Hoover manual labeled PU31, identified here by the filename in its URL, gives these intervals: the pre-motor filter is washed every three months, and the exhaust filter every month. The carbon filter should not be washed, and its replacement goes through Hoover’s spares department. The filter section says “DO NOT USE HOT WATER OR DETERGENTS!” for washing.

BISSELL

The BISSELL support article covers Zing and PowerForce bagless canister models 10M2, 1665 and 6489. The post-motor filter sits at the back of the vacuum. Wash it if necessary, then let it air dry completely for 24 to 48 hours before reinstalling. The pre-motor filter is removed by turning it counter-clockwise with the empty lid open. The article says to wash the pieces if necessary and to let all of them air dry for 24 to 48 hours before reinstalling.

Miele

The Miele HS11 manual is the en-US operating instructions for a canister vacuum cleaner named HS11 in its header. Its filter section covers a motor protection filter and one exhaust filter. Depending on the model, the machine is fitted with one of four exhaust types: AirClean, AirClean Plus 50 (light blue), Active AirClean 50 (black) and HEPA AirClean 50 (white).

Replacement triggers for the Miele HS11

The HS11 manual ties the motor protection filter to packets. Every packet of original FilterBags contains one motor protection filter and one AirClean exhaust filter, and multipacks contain four of each. Replace the motor protection filter each time you start a new packet of filter bags. The AirClean exhaust filter (type a) follows the same packet rule.

For AirClean Plus 50 (type b), the manual says to replace the filter after about one year and to note the date on the filter. For Active AirClean 50 (type c) and HEPA AirClean 50 (type d), replace the filter when the TimeStrip exhaust filter change indicator is completely red. The manual says the indicator lights after about 50 operating hours, which it equates to about a year of average use. You may keep vacuuming when the light comes on, but suction and filter effectiveness drop.

The FilterBag itself has a separate indicator: change the bag when the color marker in the change indicator turns red. The manual also says that after fitting a new type c or d filter, you activate the TimeStrip indicator. For changes involving type a, the manual says a switch from type a to type b, c or d means removing the grille before fitting the new exhaust filter, and a switch from types b, c or d back to type a means fitting the grille.

Drying and refitting rules by source

Dyson requires complete dryness before refitting, as noted above. Both Hoover manuals say to refit filters once they are completely dry. The BISSELL article applies the 24 to 48 hour air-drying period to every washed piece.

The safety warning in the manual labeled PU31 says a thermal cutout switches the appliance off to prevent overheating when it is full, blocked, or has dirty filters. It instructs users to switch off, unplug, and correct the fault, and gives approximately 45 minutes for the cutout to reset automatically. The troubleshooting checklist also gives about 30 minutes for an overheated cleaner to reset. The HS11 manual also says an empty operation lock stops the dust compartment lid from closing without a FilterBag in place, and it warns against forcing the lid.

Matching replacement parts

The HU71 manual asks owners to quote the model number when ordering parts. The HS11 manual asks owners to quote the model number when ordering exhaust filters, to make sure the correct filter is supplied. As a precaution, match the exhaust type to the filter already fitted before ordering, since the HS11 manual lists four types.

For a separate problem with reduced pickup, continue with the vacuum no-suction guide. As a precaution, keep the filter type and replacement trigger from this page when you move to that symptom.
