Vacuum Bag Indicators: Miele HS11 and SEBO AIRBELT K
Short answer
Miele's HS11 manual says fine dust can make its color marker read full before the bag fills. For SEBO AIRBELT K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi and K3 Premium, the manual says to check the amber bag/clog light at full power; if it stays on after a new bag with filters in good condition, a clog is likely.

The short answer: match the indicator to its manual
Miele’s HS11 manual describes a FilterBag color marker that can read full before the bag fills. For the SEBO AIRBELT K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi and K3 Premium, the manual describes an amber BAG FULL OR CLOG light for a full bag, an airflow blockage or an excessively dirty microfilter. Ignoring that warning can lead to a protective motor shut-off. Hoover manual pu31en01-en02 provides a troubleshooting checklist without naming a model. Numatic’s HENRY XL instructions cover bag maintenance and blockages. These sources address different checks; use the instructions for your appliance.
Why the Miele indicator can read full too early
The Miele HS11 manual explains that fine dust can make the indicator read full early. If the vacuum has picked up fine dust such as drilling dust, sand, plaster dust or flour, the pores of the FilterBag become blocked very quickly. The manual states that the indicator will show the bag as full even when it is not, and that the FilterBag must then be replaced.
The HS11 manual also says hair or carpet lint can fill the bag before the indicator reacts. To check it, fit the supplied adjustable floorhead or floorbrush, select maximum power and lift the head slightly off the floor. Change the FilterBag when its color marker turns red. See the vacuum filter replacement guide for the HS11 replacement triggers.
SEBO AIRBELT K: a light that stays on after a new bag
For the AIRBELT K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi and K3 Premium, SEBO says to check the amber bag/clog light at full power; lower settings can give an incorrect indication. If it stays on after a new bag with filters in good condition, a clog is likely. Page 14 includes the bag entrance: unplug, remove the hose, open the bag cover, remove the bag and clean the entrance.
SEBO’s warning text says that when the light comes on, the user should turn the switch off, unplug the machine and immediately insert a new bag or remove the clog. If the warning is ignored, the motor heats up because it lacks cooling airflow, and it shuts off to protect itself. SEBO says the motor can be restarted after about 30 minutes. If airflow is still restricted, the light comes on again and the machine shuts off again. The step-by-step hose checks are in the how to unclog a vacuum hose guide, and the other no-suction causes are in the vacuum no-suction guide.
Bag maintenance: Numatic HENRY XL and listed Hoover models
Some manuals ask for bag changes without tying them to a light. Numatic’s HENRY XL instructions list “Check dust bag frequently” among the daily maintenance tasks. Their DO list says to change the dust bag frequently, to keep filters clean, and to use a Numatic Original filter bag under fine dust conditions. For the models listed in the table, Hoover’s UK suction-loss page recommends regular paper-bag replacement and filter cleaning.
Missing or badly seated bags
The Miele HS11 manual says not to use the vacuum without the FilterBag, dust compartment filter and exhaust filter in place. Its dust compartment cover will not close without a FilterBag inserted; do not force it. For the Hoover models listed below, the UK suction-loss page says to discard the old bag and fit the new bag’s cardboard tongue into the slot at the holder’s base.
What changes by model
The table separates indicator guidance from bag maintenance and blockage advice. Rows identify the covered models or the source file when no model is named.
| Model or source scope | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Miele HS11 canister (en-US manual) | Check at maximum power with the supplied floorhead slightly raised: a red marker calls for a new FilterBag. Fine dust can trigger it early; hair or lint can fill the bag before it reacts. | Miele HS11 operating instructions |
| SEBO AIRBELT K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi and K3 Premium (US manual) | Check the amber BAG FULL OR CLOG light at full power. It signals a full bag, clog or excessively dirty microfilter. With a new bag and good filters, a persistent light suggests a clog. | SEBO AIRBELT K owner’s manual |
| Hoover bagged user manual, file pu31en01-en02 (UK) | The checklist asks whether the bag is full or choked with fine dust. The thermal cut-out switches the appliance off if it is used when full, blocked or with dirty filters. | Hoover bagged user manual |
| Hoover bag and filter page (UK support), PU2110, PU2120, PU2130, U3495, U3524, U3525, U3530, PU1240, PU2111, PU2121, PU2122, PU2012, PU2115/1, PU2118 and PU2300 | Replace the paper bag regularly for the best suction. Seat the new bag’s cardboard tongue in the slot at the bottom of the bag holder. | Hoover: replace the paper bag and clean the filters |
| Numatic HENRY XL range (UK edition) | Check and change the dust bag frequently. After a blockage, replace the dust bag and clean the filter once the floor tool, tubes and hose are clear. | Numatic HENRY XL instructions |
Miele HS11
The Miele HS11 operating instructions are the en-US edition. Its FilterBag section says the indicator is designed for normal household dust, which is a mixture of dust, hair, threads, carpet fluff and grit. The manual also warns that paper FilterBags, or FilterBags with a cardboard retaining plate, can seriously damage the vacuum, so use FilterBags marked as Original Miele.
SEBO AIRBELT K
The SEBO owner’s manual is the US edition and covers the AIRBELT K2 Turbo, K2 Kombi and K3 Premium. Its clog removal section covers the head or brush, the telescopic tube, the hose and the entrance to the filter bag.
Hoover
Hoover’s UK-hosted manual pu31en01-en02 names no model. Its checklist asks whether the bag is full or choked with fine dust and refers to page 5 for replacement. Its thermal warning says a full bag, blockage or dirty filters can cause shut-off: switch off, unplug and correct the fault. The warning gives about 45 minutes for reset; checklist item 8 gives about 30 minutes. These are conflicting estimates in the same file.
The separate UK Hoover suction-loss page recommends regular paper-bag replacement for the models it lists. It names PU2110, PU2120, PU2130, U3495, U3524, U3525 and U3530 among the models for these instructions.
Numatic HENRY XL
The Numatic instructions are the UK edition for the HENRY XL range. The manual covers the HENRY XL, HETTY XL PLUS, HENRY XL PLUS, HENRY HOME XL and HENRY PET XL. Its daily maintenance list includes “Check dust bag frequently.” For a blockage, it says to switch off, remove the plug, and inspect the floor tool, tubes and hose for debris. If those are clear, it says to replace the dust bag and clean the filter.
When to stop and get help
The SEBO AIRBELT K manual says to switch off and unplug before clearing a clog. Hoover file pu31en01-en02 says to switch off, unplug and correct a thermal cut-out fault. As a precaution, do not open the motor housing or any electrical compartment. As a precaution, stop using the vacuum when the light is on, change the bag or clear the clog, and contact the manufacturer if the light stays on with a new bag and clear airflow. As a precaution, have the model number ready when you call.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Miele HS11 indicator read full when the bag is not full?
Yes, according to the HS11 manual. It says fine dust such as drilling dust, sand, plaster dust or flour can block the FilterBag pores quickly. The indicator then shows the bag as full, and the manual says the FilterBag must be replaced in that case. The reverse also applies: hair and carpet lint can fill the bag before the indicator reacts.
Should I keep vacuuming when the light is on?
For the AIRBELT K models above, SEBO says ignoring the warning lets the motor overheat and shut off. Hoover file pu31en01-en02 describes a thermal cut-out for a full bag, blockage or dirty filters. As a precaution, stop and change the bag or clear the clog when the light is on.
Do I still need to check the hose after I change the bag?
For the SEBO AIRBELT K models above, a light that stays on at full power after a new bag with filters in good condition suggests a clog. Hoover file pu31en01-en02 separately asks whether the hose is blocked and refers to its blockage instructions. The how to unclog a vacuum hose guide covers hose checks in more detail.
