Check 1
On a Hoover bagged model such as PU1240 or U3530, is the bag at two-thirds full or is the filter dirty?

Check 2
On a BISSELL 10M2, 1665 or 6489, is debris on or around the post-motor filter?

Check 3
For wet and dry vacuums in Kärcher's Singapore FAQ, are the hose or filter loose, damaged or incorrectly fitted?

As a precaution, unplug before inspecting. Check hose and filter condition and fit; use a filter bag for fine dust, as Kärcher Singapore directs.
No
-
Check 4
On a Dyson SV04, is the filter damp, dirty or not seated at the top of the machine?
Yes
Wash the filter in cold water until clear. Lay it on its side until completely dry, for at least 24 hours, then refit it securely at the top.
No
None of these?
As a precaution, stop using the vacuum if dust still comes out, and contact the manufacturer with the model number and the checks you completed.

Hoover UK
Hoover’s dust-blowing-out page has six procedures, and each names its models. The bag and filter group, which names PU1240, PU2012, PU2300 and U3530, says to try a new bag and to wash the filter under the bag and the exhaust filter at the back. For that group, Hoover recommends replacing the paper bag at two-thirds full and the filters once a year. The filter-wash groups say to wash the filters in warm water and dry them thoroughly, so follow the group that lists your model.
BISSELL
BISSELL’s blowing-dust article names models 10M2, 1665 and 6489. It says to remove the post-motor filter door at the back, clear debris from on and around the filter, and air dry a washed filter for 24 to 48 hours. It also covers the dirt tank, which must sit properly on the machine, and the pre-motor filter piece, whose tabs line up with slots inside the tank before a clockwise twist locks it.
Kärcher
Kärcher’s Singapore and Australian FAQs organize their guidance by product type. The Singapore indoor products FAQ recommends a filter bag for fine dust in multi-purpose vacuums, and asks you to check that the bag is inserted correctly and replace it if damaged. For wet and dry vacuums, it asks you to check the suction hose. For spray extraction cleaners, it asks you to check the flat pleated filter. The Australian wet and dry FAQ says water can come out of the motor vent when the filter cartridge is not in place, because splashing water is sucked back up into the motor.
Samsung
Samsung’s UK odor page covers the Jet, Bespoke Jet and Powerbot series. It is an odor page. It lists dust accumulation, dirty filters and residual smells from new materials as causes of odor from the air outlet. It asks you to clean visible dust in the internal parts and to rinse the filter under running water, letting it dry completely before reinstalling. The odor side is covered in the vacuum smells bad guide.
Miele
Miele’s Triflex HX2 guide, from the Australian site, applies to the Triflex HX2. It asks you to clean both filters at least once every 3 months and to follow the steps in the order described. For the fine dust filter, it says to tap the rubberized lower edge over a bin, and not to clean it with water or brush it. The pre-filter is cleaned with the supplied dusting brush or a dry cloth. The guide also says to replace the fine dust filter (HX FSF-2) after about 3 years.
Dyson
The Dyson SV04 operating manual, from the US site, has one washable filter, lifted out of the top of the machine. It asks you to wash it with cold water, run water over the outside until it runs clear, and lay it on its side until completely dry, for a minimum of 24 hours. The manual adds that the filter may need more frequent washing when vacuuming fine dust. Its indicator section lists a fast flashing blue light as no power, temporary fault, and gives check filter or blockages as an example.
FAQ
Can I wash the filter?
It depends on the model. Hoover’s filter-wash groups call for warm water and thorough drying. The BISSELL article calls for 24 to 48 hours of air drying. The Dyson SV04 manual calls for cold water and complete drying, with the filter on its side for at least 24 hours. Miele’s Triflex HX2 guide says not to clean the fine dust filter with water.
What if a full bag is still in the machine?
Hoover’s bag and filter procedure says to try a new bag. For the models it names, including PU1240 and U3530, Hoover recommends replacing the paper bag at two-thirds full.
Why does my Kärcher wet and dry vacuum push water out of the motor vent?
The Australian FAQ says this normally happens when the filter cartridge is not in place, with water splashing into the tank and being sucked back up into the motor. As a precaution, fit the filter specified for your model before wet or dry pickup.
