Match the symptom to the model

As a precaution, identify your model and its floor head before choosing a procedure. The steps below come from BISSELL and Hoover support pages and a Miele manual, and each one names the model it covers, so use a step only for the matching model. Check what is actually stopped

As a precaution, use the no-start guide if the whole vacuum has no power, and avoid forcing a stationary brush against the floor. The sections below group the documented checks by control, obstruction and drive.

Model-specific brush controls

On the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Canister 2230, BISSELL says the brush roll button on the handle must be turned on for the brush to spin. The page also tells owners to press that button to activate the brush roll during a test.

On the Pet Hair Eraser Turbo, the page says the vacuum may be locked in the upright position. It tells owners to recline the vacuum and switch the brush roll button on, pushing it to the ON position.

On the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable Pet, the brush roll will not spin in the upright position. The page says to make sure the unit is reclined, then toggle the MODE selector so that it is not in Brush OFF mode. The WindTunnel Tangle Guard page gives the same two checks, using its MODE (C) selector.

The Miele Electrobrush SEB 236 is a motor-driven accessory with its own connection socket and release button. Its manual says the Electrobrush switches itself off if the connection socket is brought back up to its upright position during vacuuming. The electro hoses have an On/Off switch on the handle that switches the Electrobrush on and off independently, and the vacuum then continues on suction only. The foot switch selects one of five height settings, from setting 1 closest to the floor to setting 5 furthest from it.

Inspect only while unplugged

As a precaution, switch off and unplug a corded vacuum before opening a brush cover, clearing the roll or inspecting a belt. The BISSELL Canister 2230 page likewise tells owners to turn the machine off and unplug it before working on the brush.

On the Canister 2230, the page says a broken belt calls for a new power foot, which it directs owners to order from its parts section. BISSELL describes fitting the brush into the belt and head, securing the sole plate with its locking tabs, then reconnecting power and testing with the handle brush button on.

For the PowerForce Pet Deluxe and CleanView uprights, the page lists PowerForce Pet Deluxe 3334/3335 and CleanView 3533/35332/3534/3536/3536C/3675/3676/36762. BISSELL describes unplugging, reclining the handle, removing the six Phillips screws and access plate, and lifting out the roll. Its test uses the removed roll standing on a flat surface: one hand holds the top while the other flicks it. A roll that fails to spin freely needs replacement. For reassembly, BISSELL describes looping the belt over the motor shaft and roll, seating the roll under belt tension, rotating it to align the belt, and securing the plate with its six screws.

On the Hoover WindTunnel Air Steerable Pet, the page says to recline the unit and unscrew four screws on the bottom plate. If the brush roll is clogged or tangled, the automatic shut-off can activate. On the Tangle Guard, the page says to rotate the roll manually from the bottom and cut any tangle you find.

Let a thermal protector cool

Hoover’s WindTunnel Air Steerable Pet page says its thermal protector may have activated. Its steps are to switch off and unplug the unit, empty the dirt cup, clean the nozzle, filter and hose connector, then wait 30 minutes before resuming. The Tangle Guard page describes its thermal protector with the same cleaning steps and the same 30-minute wait.

The Miele SEB 236 manual identifies a red light as a roller blockage. Its sequence is to switch off, unplug, remove the blockage, press the indicator to reset, then reconnect and switch on. For wrapped threads or hairs, it describes cutting along the roller’s guide track while unplugged; the cut pieces can be vacuumed up after restarting. Yellow indicates normal operation unless the Electrobrush has switched itself off with the light still on. For that shutdown, Miele directs owners to switch off, unplug, check for blockages and inspect all filters. The manual gives about ten minutes as a recovery time. As a precaution, keep the vacuum unplugged while it cools and resume only after it has cooled.

If the brush stops on premium soft carpet, BISSELL’s Pet Hair Eraser Turbo page says the brush motor may have stalled. BISSELL recommends adjusting the Floor Type Setting for plusher carpet, switching the vacuum off, unplugging it, then reconnecting and turning it on. The Miele manual also says the Electrobrush should not be used on deep-pile rugs, valuable hand-knotted rugs or long-piled rugs, because threads can be pulled out.
